Many women throughout history have played significant roles in the development of music, but their contributions have gone unnoticed. This course will explore the compositional and performance styles of women in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Although we will not cover the entire canon of women composers and performers throughout this period, this course aims to help students understand scholarly approaches to thinking about women and music. By closely listening to recordings and watching videos of composers and performers, this practice will allow us to understand how each of these musicians approaches performance, especially considering gender roles, sexuality, and cultural contexts. In addition to learning to use sound recordings and video for the course, the students will also listen to informative podcasts, read news articles, and submits papers to engage with current scholarly ideas.
